The Health Service is a training organisation offering a first class rural helath experience for student placements. This year we have increased our student intake by 400% in line with the demand for placements and through the Clinical Placement Networks. This State Government Initiative maximises the student placement capabilities.

We have also been fortunate to obtain funding through a regional collaborative grant from Health Workforce Australia to implement the flexible model of placement. It will give us an opportunity to provide suitable accommodation for students from the Australian Catholic University and the University of Ballarat. This will result in the renovation of a house in Beaufort and an addition to the staff flat at Skipton. The project has also included work on developing on line preceptorship course as well as the development of preceptorship booklets and face to face study days for preceptors.

We continue to take nursing students from other universities and registered trining organisations. We are also into our second year of placing overseas trained nurses. It has been a wonderful opportunity to share our health system and culture with them while having a much better understanding of the countries from which they come.

This is our 14th year of the Graduate Nurse Program. This program originally commenced across both campuses, but ceased at Skipton in 2000. This year we were successful in obtaining funds through the Early Collaborative Graduate Program with three other health services, which has enabled us to increas the number of graduates in our program. We now have two graduate nurses working across both campuses, completing a surgical rotation with their theoretical component at Ballarat Health Services. We value and appreciate the close collaboration and support we have from the Education Resource Centre at Ballarat Health Service.

This year has seen a reduction in trainees with the corresponding increase in student placements. Currently there is an Enrolled Nurse trainee at Skipton and a Personal Care Worker trainee at Beaufort.

The Board of Management's support in the implementation of our successful recruitment and retention strategy is much appreciated. The return on investment in education by our Health Service demonstrates that we have good applicants for positions and excellent retention rates. Making staff feel appreciated, confident, and supported in their practice assists in providing a healthy environment for our workforce and our residents, patients and clients.
